This is the rambunctious, ridiculous and totally true story of how the Minions conquered Hollywood, became movie stars, lost everything, unleashed monsters onto the world and then banded together to try and save the planet from the mayhem they had just created.
Watching the Minions being fed through Modern Times’ industrial cogs or gatecrashing Buster Keaton’s Steamboat Bill, Jr is a joy.
This is a hoot, combining world-class slapstick with the Pixar-approved strategy of catering to parents, which here means a wave of movie references, from Citizen Kane and Jaws to Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton.
Even when “Minions & Monsters” is at its weakest, there is a sense of genuine creative glee within it that’s all too often missing from franchise films of its nature.
