Behind the Screen: How the Cromarty Cinema Programme Works (and What’s On in April)

First of all, a huge thank you to everyone who made Mark Cousins’ specially curated In Dreams weekend so magical, from our brilliant volunteers to everyone who came along and embraced the atmosphere (and the surprises!). It was truly one for the books.
We’ve also had some great feedback recently, along with a few questions about our film programme, particularly around how often we screen films and why we don’t always show the latest blockbusters straight away, or sometimes at all. We thought it might be helpful to share a bit about how things work behind the scenes.
What we screen
Our volunteer team selects films based on what’s newly released each month, alongside what we think our audiences will enjoy. We aim to strike a balance, from family films and documentaries to independent cinema and big-name releases. We always try to bring you the most popular new films, but sometimes this isn’t within our control.
When we screen
Big studio films are often restricted to large cinema chains such as Vue for the first few weeks after release. This means that even if we request a film, we may not be allowed to screen it until several weeks later, and in some cases not at all, as some titles move quickly to streaming platforms.
As a volunteer-run cinema, the number of screenings we can offer is also shaped by the availability of our team. That said, we always do our best to meet demand, including adding extra screenings where possible, such as matinees during ferry season.
And speaking of ferry season, it’s here. Our first ferry matinee, Epic: Elvis Presley in Concert, takes place on 7 April. Ferry passenger or not, everyone is very welcome.
What’s on in April at Cromarty Cinema
There’s plenty more to look forward to this month, so do take a look at the full programme at https://cromartycinema.com/films/.
Finally, a quick update. In line with Eden Court, our standard ticket price will increase to £10 from 1 April. If you’re a regular, now’s a great time to become a Friend of the Cinema and enjoy discounted tickets. Find out more at https://cromartycinema.com/join-us/.
As always, thank you for your support. It’s what keeps Cromarty Cinema going.
