Unbound is the story of a group of defiant young dancers, abused by the ballet world, but now fighting back. They want to form a radical, diverse new company that opens its doors to other ballet abuse survivors, and together, ‘reclaim the stage’. They find a run down studio, and Chase Johnsey – a gender fluid dance insurgent, to direct them. But, they have no money, no reputation, & Chase has never directed before. The dancers are brave, but deeply fragile. Many have faced violence, body shaming, eating disorders, racism and sexual abuse. For their company to survive, they must start from nothing, face these traumas, fight for justice, & find belief to dance again with defiance and joy. It is a journey of pain and hope and resistance, as they struggle to change their lives and create groundbreaking, liberated ballet – one choreographed step at a time.
