The stakes couldn’t be higher for displaced Palestinian refugees Chatila and Reda in this knife-edge drama. The cousins are saving to pay for fake passports to get out of Athens, but when Reda loses their hard-earned cash to his drug addiction, Chatila hatches an extreme plan to pose as smugglers in an attempt to get them out of their desperate situation before it is too late.

The hard-scrabble gutter existence is vividly captured by a restless, questioning camera, but we learn the most from Bakri’s superb performance, as he wrestles with guilt over what he has become.

To a Land Unknown is a rare example of slick stylistics seamlessly combined with verisimilitude.

This is a confident, angry, fully-realized drama which should see its makers afforded further opportunities to craft similarly vital work.
