A reclusive English teacher attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter.
Fraser, so good, takes what could be a joke, a flat tragedy, or even a lecture about weight and imbues it with gorgeous humanity.
[The Whale] is stagy and mawkish. Watching it, you feel grossly manipulated but the approach is undeniably effective.
Sometimes an actor can help minimize a director’s shortcomings, and that’s what Fraser does here.
