A cash-strapped Nicolas Cage agrees to make a paid appearance at a billionaire super fan’s birthday party, but is really an informant for the CIA since the billionaire fan is a drug kingpin and gets cast in a Tarantino movie.
It’s a cash-in on Cage’s meme-y notoriety, yes, but it’s also an assertion of the genuine, if shaggy, movie star charisma that gave him a career at all.
The film rockets through its more conventional, action-comedy finale purely because both actors throw themselves wholeheartedly into the slapstick. It’s a big win for Pascal.
Not only is the film a tongue-in-cheek, cleverly meta tribute to one of Hollywood’s most mercurial actors, it’s also a light-hearted delight that reminds us how fun movies can be.
