Hans Jurgen Höss had a pleasant upbringing in the family mansion located in Auschwitz, while Jewish inmate Anita Lasker-Wallfisch was struggling to make it through the infamous concentration camp. The main focus of this film revolves around a significant and uplifting encounter – occurring eight decades later – when these two individuals finally meet. This marks the first instance where a descendant of a prominent war criminal meets a survivor in such a personal and close setting, within Anita’s home in London. Alongside their children, Kai Höss and Maya Lasker-Wallfisch, the four main characters delve into their contrasting family legacies.
An overpowering work of excavation and confrontation—as well as a timely and urgent warning about the continuing threat of antisemitism.
