In the early 17th century, a soldier arrives at an isolated Protestant village in Germany claiming to be the heir to an abandoned farmstead. Even though he proves to be a good man, the villagers’ suspicions about his identity grow and they force a reckoning.
Schrödinger’s Rose is both real and not, an amalgam of many historical cases in which women attempted, via savvy subterfuge, to right patriarchal wrongs. The tragedy that befell so many of these brave souls hangs heavy over Schleinzer’s film.
Not since Sally Potter’s breakout feature “Orlando” has a film explored gender privilege so effectively through a historical lens and via a singularly astounding European actress.
For all the Olympian acting craft it showcases, “Rose” is no mere performance vehicle.. It’s a work so tightly disciplined in every aspect that any bum thespian note would shatter the whole immaculate construction.
