Brought back to life by an unorthodox scientist, a young woman runs off with a lawyer on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, she grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.
It’s a showcase for Stone, who rapidly goes from preverbal toddling to childlike wonder to restless adolescence… Her performance displays the balance and dexterity of a chainsaw juggler.
It can be hysterically funny and incredibly disturbing, sometimes in the same beat, and it’s the most visually accomplished film that Lanthimos has made.
An adventurous and imaginary film, Poor Things is a bizarre Frankenstein story. Emma Stone does the heavy lifting exceptionally skilfully in a beautifully crafted world with surreal architecture and dazzling colours. Her character is innocently curious and self-possessed, bending the rules of polite society in a way which is very refreshing. I love the endless peculiarity in Yorgos Lanthimos’ films and his exposure of the embarrassing characteristics of human nature. Poor Things pushes that to the next level, whilst being extremely funny and delightfully perverse.
