Chiloé Island, 1880. Rosa Raín is a Huilliche girl who, after the murder of her father at the hands of German settlers, seeks justice with Mateo, leader of an organization of sorcerers called “La Recta Provincia”.
Though on the surface a tale of vengeance, Christopher Murray’s film sees revenge as a small part of a far greater, more interesting story of an island girl’s self-discovery.
On the surface, “Sorcery” is a revenge film about a girl’s desire for vengeance, but below the surface is a gorgeous showcase of misunderstood Indigenous traditions and beliefs.
The dark, brooding coming-of-age drama can be ponderous and blunt, but its liberating magic casts an infectious spell.
