Thelonious “Monk” Ellison’s writing career has stalled because his work isn’t deemed “Black enough.” Monk, a writer and English professor, writes a satirical novel under a pseudonym, aiming to expose the publishing world’s hypocrisies. The book’s immediate success forces him to get deeper enmeshed in his assumed identity and challenges his closely-held worldviews.
Monk is perfect the way he is, especially as Wright plays him. Watching this performance makes American Fiction a complex, sometimes discomfiting pleasure.
When you watch Wright feel out the contours and add several dozen notes of grace to the misanthropic Monk… you truly understand why few screen performers can match him.
The helmer trusts his audience to bring themselves to the material. Ultimately, that’s what makes reading “American Fiction” so rewarding.
Feels like Jordan Peele snuck a bottle of pepper sauce into Alexander Payne’s Thanksgiving dinner.
