As his term as President of Italy draws to a close, Mariano De Santis is confronted with difficult decisions — both political and profoundly personal. Amid these ethical dilemmas, he must face his own conscience and turn to those closest to him for support, including his confidante and daughter, Dorotea.
The unknowability of life is beautiful, but so too is our desire to know. To be human, La Grazia seems to say, is to fight and lose against uncertainty, and then to fight and lose some more.
Arguably, none of this would count for as much, or anything, without Servillo: but it’s a satisfying meditation on the pleasures and sadnesses of solitude in old age.
