After running out of money while backpacking in a tiny, male-dominated town in the Australian outback, two friends resort to a working holiday at the Royal Hotel. When the locals behavior starts crossing the line, the girls find themselves trapped in an unnerving situation that grows rapidly out of their control.

A psychological thriller, it’s all the more tense for Green’s smart understatement of the genre elements.

Green gets us looking for danger in every scene — and we usually find it. She’s taken us here, to this extremely specific place, to sharpen our awareness of the tiniest red flags that flap around the globe.

Laughter and wails are almost interchangeable. That tension makes the film excruciating but exciting; like the characters, the viewer has to try to suss out what is a danger and what is just a good time.
